Gaokao (NCEE) is a national unified examination for college enrollment in China.
Gaokao is a turning point for the fate of many students and a miniature of China’s Millennium imperial examination system and It is a very important examination for the Chinese people.
Today, various provinces and cities successively announced the number of applicants for Gaokao and looking at the number of applicants in the past five years, the number of applicants in 2021 years has exceeded 11 million, which is a high probability event.
The increase in the number of people means that Gaokao is becoming more and more competitive.
Under the condition that the passing rate of college entrance examination remains unchanged, the passing score line of Gaokao keeps rising with the number of candidates.
In order to solve the high pressure of candidates, the universities has a small-scale enrollment expansion and the construction of new universities every year.
This change is not a great pressure for candidates to enter ordinary universities, but it is still very difficult to enter famous universities.
The number of applicants in Gaokao of Henan Province has reached 1.25 million, ranking the first in China, an increase of 1.08% compared with last year, and the admission scores of famous universities in 2020 have increased by 42 points compared with that in 2019, which shows that the competition is fierce.
Is the Gaokao fair？
Most people think that Gaokao is a relatively fair competition mechanism in China, because students can enter their favorite universities or cities to study.
With the increasing pressure of entering a higher school and the influence of covid-19, the number of Gaokao repeat students in 2020 has reached 2.4 million, accounting for 22.4% of the total number of candidates, and many candidates feel unfair.
In 2021, there are 1.87 million Gaokao repeat students, which is lower than that of last year, but compare with the number of 400000 repeat students in 2014 is still a big increase.
In recent year, many Gaokao repeaters choose to repeats for one year because they have not been admitted to their target colleges, rather than fail in the Gaokao.
The education department is also aware of the problems brought about by the Gaokao repeat students.
Some provinces have made restrictions on the repeat students such as public high schools are not allowed to accept re-study students to maintain the fairness of Gaokao.
